Resistive Material Measurement Probe (RMMP)

Person's hand on a resistive material measurement probe, which is a handheld device integrating a miniaturized VNA

The resistive material measurement probe (RMMP) is an open-ended stripline transmission line that can be placed on a material specimen or component to determine its intrinsic properties. This handheld device integrates a miniaturized VNA so that it is compact and rugged. It also uses CEM inversion to extract of complex dielectric permittivity or complex sheet impedance, depending on the user’s need.

Applications of the RMMP:

  • This device can characterize materials either when they are isolated, or when integrated onto a structure or a multilayer stack. Examples of how RMMP has been used include:
    • Measure anechoic absorbers such as honeycomb or carbon loaded foam.
    • Used to screen resistive sheet materials as they are manufactured for various applications.
    • Characterizing materials after they are laminated or embedded within other layers of material.

Benefits of the RMMP:

  • Handheld tool that enables measurements in situ and nondestructively at the manufacturing location.
  • Smaller and lower-cost alternative to conventional waveguide systems used to measure materials at low frequencies.
  • More advanced alternative to old-style coaxial probes.
  • More robust and reliable for converting the measured reflection amplitude and phase into complex impedance or permittivity.
  • Ability to characterize anisotropic materials.

Additional Information

  • The RMMP comes in two form-factors: RMMP and mini-RMMP
