Rf Capacitor

RF Capacitor equipment is used to convert measured s-parameters into complex permittivity

The RF Capacitor is a device for determining the complex dielectric permittivity of bulk materials at very-high (VHF) and ultra-high (UHF) frequencies. It combines the concept of a low frequency capacitance method with radio frequency (RF) principles to enable accurate characterization of isotropic or anisotropic materials. It utilizes computational electromagnetic (CEM) inversion to convert the measured S-parameters into complex permittivity. CEM inversion applies a pre-computed database and interpolation to accurately determine intrinsic properties, which contrasts with conventional transmission line fixtures.

Applications of the RF Capacitor:

This fixture is effective for determining dielectric permittivity and loss of bulk absorber materials such as carbon loaded foam or honeycomb used in anechoic chamber absorber. The RF capacitor provides data that is just as accurate as using a large waveguide fixture, but over a wider bandwidth and with a much smaller (3 inch / 76.2 mm) cube specimen.

Benefits of the RF Capacitor:

  • Characterizes a single specimen over a very broad frequency range.
  • The same specimen can be measured in different orientations to capture all three principle permittivities when a material is anisotropic.
  • Easier and less expensive than waveguide.
